阿菲夫出生于拿撒勒。阿菲夫的传记中声称他的母亲是犹太人，而他的父亲是一位富有的基督徒阿拉伯商人[4][5]。然而，他的家人和以色列内政部的记录都对他母亲的说法提出异议。根据记录，他的母亲阿丽法（Arifa）于1920年出生，父亲是哈桑（Hassan），母亲是阿米娜（Amina）[6]。阿菲夫有三个兄弟，他们都参加了黑色九月；两个被关在以色列监狱[7]。1958年，他到西德学习工程，学会了西德的语言，然后到法国工作[5][8]。

根据赛门·李维的说法，阿菲夫很享受在欧洲渡过的时光，但在1966年加入法塔赫，可能是在德国居住期间。他后来回到中东，与以色列士兵打了好几场仗[7]。

黑色九月头目阿布·伊亚德（英语：Salah Khalaf）写道，阿菲夫和他的副手东尼都曾于1970年9月在安曼和1971年7月在杰拉什和阿杰隆战役（英语：Ajlun offensive）中参战[7]。1970年代初，阿菲夫住在柏林，并与一名德国女子订婚[9]。

根据包括塞尔吉·格鲁萨德（英语：Serge Groussard）和赛门·李维在内的多个消息来源，阿菲夫声称他挟持以色列人为人质的个人原因是为了让他的两个兄弟离开以色列的监狱。慕尼黑警察局长、德国谈判人之一曼弗雷德·施莱伯（Manfred Schreiber）对他的描述是“非常冷静、坚决，显然对自己的信念非常狂热”；他以强硬的方式表达自己的要求，有时“听起来就像那些没有完全立足于现实的人”。人质危机中的多张照片显示，阿菲夫头戴白色沙滩帽，身穿亚麻布狩猎服，脸上涂满木炭或鞋油[10]。
