Ukraine's Cultural Diplomacy Month 2023: We are back!

Hello, dear Wikipedians!

Wikimedia Ukraine, in cooperation with the and , has launched the third edition of writing challenge "Ukraine's Cultural Diplomacy Month", which lasts from 1st until 31st March 2023. The campaign is dedicated to famous Ukrainian artists of cinema, music, literature, architecture, design and cultural phenomena of Ukraine that are now part of world heritage. We accept contribution in every language! The most active contesters will receive prizes.

We invite you to take part and help us improve the coverage of Ukrainian culture on Wikipedia in your language! Also, we plan to set up a banner to notify users of the possibility to participate in such a challenge!

Enabling Section Translation: a new mobile translation experience

The WMF Language team would like to enable the Section translation tool in Chinese Wikipedia. Our team will love you to read about the tool and test it so you can ask us any questions and give us your feedback about our enabling it in your Wikipedia.

Below is background information about Content and Section translation and why we want to enable the Section translation tool in your Wikipedia.

Background information

Content Translation has been a successful tool for multilingual editors to translate content from one language to another. More than one million articles have been created across all languages since the tool was released in 2015, and it has been used to translate more than thirty-one thousand articles (31,000) in your Wikipedia.

The Wikimedia Foundation Language team has improved the translation experience further with the Section Translation tool, which the early version was enabled in the Bengali Wikipedia in February 2021. Through Bengali and other communities' feedback, we have improved it, deployed it in other Wikipedias, and it is ready to be enabled in Chinese Wikipedia.

Section Translation extends the capabilities of Content Translation; it is developed to support mobile devices and the tool will:

  • Guide you to translate one section at a time to expand existing articles or create new ones.
  • Make it easy to transfer knowledge across languages anytime from your mobile device.

Chinese Wikipedia seems an ideal Wiki to enjoy this new tool since the Content Translation tool is frequently used in this Wikipedia.

We plan to enable the tool in the coming weeks if there are no objections from your community. After it is enabled, we'll monitor the content created with it so we can evaluate the outcome. In any case, feel free to ask us questions as a reply to this message.

Before the enablement, you can try the current implementation of the tool in our testing instance, and once it is enabled on Chinese Wikipedia, you'll have access to the tool from this link: https://zh1.bitforum.be.eu.org/wiki/Special:ContentTranslation with your mobile device, where you can use it to translate articles.

Here's your quick overview of what has been happening around Wikidata over the last week.
  • Development
    • EntitySchemas: We are preparing for adding a new datatype and other changes by improving tests, documentation, etc.
    • Date input: We did a bug triage hour around issues with date parsing and improved it for Japanese dates (phab:T214002)
    • Ontology issues: We started evaluating the survey responses for the survey about different types of ontology issues reusers are facing. More work is needed before we have results.
    • REST API: We finished work on including the URL of an article in sitelink data (phab:T330252) as well as providing all aliases of an Item (phab:T327882)

Hello, This is Amal Ramadan, Sr. community relations specialist supporting the apps team.

The Android team has heard many requests from the community to have ways to ensure that the edits made in the apps are of good quality. With the team's recent release of a native watchlist, contribution history, and edit history, as well as the addition of the undo and rollback button on the diff screen, there is an opportunity to create a moderating solution in the app. We would like to do this in partnership with the community.

We would like to invite you to test the first iteration of the patrolling tool designs. Your input at this stage will allow us to improve the tool before development as well as gather important feedback for the second iteration of the tool.
